Abstract

In May 2017, entering the fifth month in 2017 which coincided with the month of Ramadan, Metro City experienced inflation. The expenditure group that triggered inflation was dominated by foodstuff category with inflation contribution of 0.4493 percent followed by housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group with inflation contribution of 0.2083 percent; Followed by food, beverage, cigarette and tobacco groups with inflation contribution of 0.1058 percent; Clothing group with inflation contribution of 0.0645 percent and followed by transport, communication and financial services group with inflation contribution 0,0394 percent and health group with inflation contribution 0,0011 percent. While the expenditure group that withstood the inflation rate in Metro City in May 2017 ie the education, recreation and sports group with a share of deflation by 0.0092 percent. Changes in the index in the seven expenditure groups caused inflation in Metro City by 0.86 percent.

Commodities contributing substantial inflation during May 2017 include garlic, electricity tariffs, red peppers, chicken eggs, filter clove cigarettes, household fuels, vegetable tomatoes, potatoes, gasoline and motorcycles. Based on the calculation of Consumer Price Index (CPI) in May 2017, Metro City inflation was caused by an increase in index in the foodstuff category which experienced inflation of 1.57 percent; Clothing group experiencing inflation of 1.15 percent; Housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels inflation of 0.94 percent, food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco with inflation at 0.60 percent; Transport, communication and financial services group with inflation of 0.34 percent and health group with 0.01 percent inflation. Meanwhile, the group holding back the inflation rate was the education, recreation and sports group with a deflation of 0.13 percent.

In May 2017, based on inflation calculations from 82 cities observed by price developments, there were 70 cities experiencing inflation and 12 deflationary cities. The highest inflation occurred in Tual of 0.96 percent, while the lowest inflation occurred in Bulukumba with inflation of 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Manado at 1.13 percent, while the lowest deflation occurred in Pematang Siantar with deflation of 0.01 percent. Metro City with inflation of 0.86 percent ranked 5th nationally. Of the 23 cities on the island of Sumatra, the highest inflation occurred in Tanjung Pandan by 0.90 percent and the lowest occurred in Meulaboh at 0.06 percent. Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Pangkal Pinang at 0.93 percent while the lowest deflation occurred in Pematang Siantar by 0.01 percent. Metro City with inflation of 0.86 percent ranked 4th on the island of Sumatra.
